Arthur Chapman's civil appellate litigation practice group develops effective civil appeals, both simple and complex, in state and federal courts. Our attorneys have the experience and the skills required to effectively bring or respond to an appeal.
If litigation includes a trial, why retain specialty appellate counsel to handle the appeal rather than trial counsel? Appeals are a unique form of litigation requiring a unique set of skills. Appellate lawyers use their familiarity with appellate court practice and procedure to present the client's case in the best manner possible in a setting that differs greatly from the trial court. While trial lawyers use evidence to tell persuasive, and sometimes emotional, stories to convince jurors of facts, appellate lawyers use the law to craft arguments that persuade appellate court judges to affirm or reverse the rulings of the trial courts.
Arthur Chapman is no stranger to the appellate courtroom. Our firm has participated in hundreds of civil appeals in numerous state and federal courts. Our civil appellate practice specialists understand appellate court procedure and appreciate the varied backgrounds and philosophies of appellate jurists. Our success in the appellate courts has led our attorneys to take on two roles as appellate counselors:
As Lead Appellate Counsel
Our appellate lawyers will serve as lead appellate counsel. Our attorneys are intimately familiar with appellate court filing requirements, procedures, and deadlines, as well as the technical requirements of briefs and appellate court motions. They are legal scholars, and they skillfully tailor that knowledge to their client's legal problem by developing written and oral arguments of the highest quality in substance, form, and style.
As Appellate Advisor
Our appellate lawyers will serve as appellate advisors to trial attorneys. At times, clients prefer or even require trial counsel to handle the appeal. In these instances, our appellate attorneys will work with trial counsel to evaluate the trial court record and assess whether appellate litigation serves the client's best interest. Our appellate attorneys will provide a wide range of appellate litigation support services needed to formulate persuasive written and oral arguments that advance the client's interests and make the appeal process less daunting. When retained in the early stages of the case, our attorneys will advise trial counsel to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to handling the appeal before it even begins.
Whether your case calls for lead counsel to handle the civil appeal, or just sound and experienced advice, Arthur Chapman's civil appellate litigation attorneys have the knowledge and skills necessary to develop an effective appeal.
