Now in effect, below is a summary of the significant updates to the arbitration rules and mediation procedures.

After expansive changes in 2023, the Minnesota legislature has rolled out new legislation, once again impacting Minnesota businesses. Some of the changes go into effect July 1, 2024 and August 1, 2024. Employers should update their policies and practice. Below is a summary of the new requirements:

Carissa is a first year law student at the University of St. Thomas School of Law. She joins our team for the next ten weeks in partnership with Twin Cities Diversity in Practice 1L Clerkship Program.

Hailey Stephany joins our team as a law clerk. She is currently a law student at the University of Denver and is excited to spend time in the Minneapolis legal community. In her free time, Hailey loves to travel. She also enjoys playing and coaching lacrosse, running, cooking, and exploring new restaurants.

During its 2024 session, the Minnesota Legislature expanded and clarified the Earned Sick and Safe Time (“ESST”) Act in significant ways. Many of the changes are now in effect. Employers should update their ESST policies and practice.

By: Aaron Abelleira I recently had the opportunity to speak at the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) Northland Conference on the topic of Cannabis & Construction and had a number of great questions presented to me on this topic. While I attempted to answer as many questions as possible, I wanted to provide a follow-up article explaining some of the issues contractors are currently facing since Minnesota legalized cannabis use in August of 2023.

Can you provide a brief overview of your legal background and practice area(s)?  I devote majority of my practice to defending construction trades against defect claims, contract disputes, additional-insured litigation, and work injuries. I am a part of Arthur Chapman’s Construction Law Group, and we represent a wide array of clients such as general contractors, subcontractors, manufacturers, suppliers, and owners.  

We are excited to welcome attorney Anton Ragozin to our team. Anton is joining both our worker's compensation and civil litigation teams. Welcome, Anton! 

What inspired you to become an attorney, and how did you choose your specific field of law?  I started out in construction when I was a kid working with my dad, building log homes. After that, I built residential homes in the Bemidji, MN area, and ultimately decided to get my degree in Construction Management. During college I worked for a general contractor in Fargo doing mostly commercial remodel and tenant improvement work, and then worked for an owner’s representative firm doing MnSCU college campus work. During that time I had to deal with a number of disputes, and had to talk to a construction lawyer for the first time. From there, I decided to go to law school with the intention of becoming a construction lawyer. With my background and passion for all things construction, it was a natural progression. I am passionate about the construction industry, and I am right where I belong.

Are you involved in any legal or community organizations? How does this involvement contribute to your practice? I have the distinct pleasure of being a member of the Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association, and I have also been a committee member for the Minnesota Construction Association for a couple of years now, and I believe that both of these distinct non-profit groups have given me insight into what my fellow attorneys are involved with legally, as well as a more nuanced understanding of what issues contractors navigate in today’s ever-changing legal landscape. 

What inspired you to become an attorney? Prior to becoming an attorney, I majored in journalism at the University of Minnesota and worked a reporter for several newspapers in the Twin Cities. When I started writing opinion pieces for a local newspaper, I discovered a passion for advocacy. That discovery started me on a journey towards attending law school, working as a litigator, and becoming an advocate for my clients. 

This year our practice groups will each have a month to be in the spotlight. For March, we are excited to highlight and share more on our Construction Practice Group.
